Oprah's Biggest Give Influences Local Radio Station

March 2008

Oprah’s Biggest Give has impacted Richmond, Virginia via Q94 Radio’s morning crew, Melissa and Sid. The radio morning show hosts have adopted this motivational model and shaped Melissa and Sid’s Little Give. Through radio and website promotion, four Richmond area residents were enlisted and called to action. Each participant must use only $10 and compete to make the biggest impact within our community. Rebecca Mitchell, Q94 Radio Morning Show Production Representative, stated, “What we hope people will realize, is that just about everyone has $10 to spare...Anyone can do what these four people are doing.”

Children’s Miracle Network-Richmond supporter, Jennifer Pendergrass, has pledged to use her $10 (personally provided by Melissa and Sid), to help raise funds for local children’s charities. “I am always looking for ways to give back the community and have been watching Oprah’s Big Give thinking how great it would be to participate on the show,” said Jennifer. It is an honor for Children’s Miracle Network-Richmond to be selected as one of her local beneficiaries. In an effort to make the largest impact in this competition, Jennifer used her allotted funds to purchase “chance to win” tickets. She then encouraged area businesses and attractions to support her endeavor by donating items or services to be raffled off. Pendergrass stated, “I’m not sure what made me think of selling raffle tickets, it just sort of made sense to me. I also thought about how great it would be to not only support children’s charities but to also help local businesses by getting their name out to each person who buys a raffle ticket.”

On behalf of the children who receive care from Children’s Miracle Network-Richmond’s member hospitals, we thank Oprah, Q94, Melissa, Sid and Jennifer for inspiring members of our community to make a difference.
